AEGIS (RYZE Group) has completed the refurbishment and energy-efficiency upgrade of the “Leonardo da Vinci” Student Residence at the Politecnico di Milano
AEGIS, an engineering and architecture company within the RYZE Group specialising in integrated design and the management of complex infrastructure projects, carried out, on behalf of Consorzio Integra, the construction management for the renovation and energy efficiency upgrade of the “Leonardo da Vinci” Student Residence, the oldest university hall of residence managed by the Politecnico di Milano, contributing to the realisation of one of the most significant regeneration projects involving Italian university heritage.
The tasks entrusted to AEGIS included the preparation of building permit applications during construction and authorisation requests to the Superintendency, the architectural and structural design and electrical systems design for the contractors carrying out the works, and the subsequent preparation of the as-built drawings.
The building, constructed in the 1930s and listed under Legislative Decree 42/2004 for its historical and architectural value, is an important example of Italian Rationalist architecture. Situated in the heart of the Città Studi district, on Viale Romagna, a short walk from the Leonardo da Vinci campus of the Politecnico di Milano, it has undergone a major refurbishment project carried out under Call for Proposals No. 338/2022 of the Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR), dedicated to the enhancement of university accommodation.
The project involved the complete refurbishment of the interior spaces, the replacement of technical systems, the improvement of the building envelope’s energy performance and a significant increase in accommodation capacity: the building now offers 420 beds, a full 84 more than in its previous configuration, making a tangible contribution to expanding the housing provision for university students.
The project has also restored functionality and quality to the communal areas: the auditorium has been completely refurbished, whilst the historic sports hall has been transformed into a modern indoor beach volleyball court. The facility is complemented by kitchens on every floor, new study rooms and fully refurbished spaces designed to meet the needs of university life, representing a total investment of 35.6 million euros.
With a total floor area of over 16,300 square metres, the project represents a strategic initiative to enhance university accommodation provision and confirms AEGIS’s role as a leading partner in construction design supporting contractors and in the management of complex regeneration projects for existing buildings, whilst respecting their historical and architectural value.
