Project and description of the property
The Etihad Arena, located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi and opened in 2021, stands out as an iconic venue designed to host live events with a maximum capacity of 18,000 seats. Set within a waterfront development area of approximately 35,000 square metres, the arena offers a versatile 3,565-square-metre event space, striking a refined balance between aesthetic impact, functionality and sustainability.
The architectural design combines cutting-edge technology with elements inspired by local culture, as evidenced by the building’s exterior structure and façades, which are constructed using a system of expanded aluminium mesh panels. The form and façade have been designed to minimise solar heat gain through optimised geometries, adjustable sunshades and thermal buffer zones, thereby ensuring high energy efficiency. The roofing system is particularly sophisticated, representing an excellent fusion of architecture and structural engineering, seamlessly blending functionality and design.
Our activities
AEGIS – RYZE Group acted as Italmesh’s design engineer for the façade engineering aspects of the project:
- Detailed structural design of all custom aluminium components for the panel fixing system
- Finite element numeric analyses
- Optimisation of the façade panel layout
- Preparation of all production shop drawings for façade cladding panels (standard and custom), using customised automated parametric modelling systems
